Welfare is Highest-Paying Entry Level Job in All but Fifteen States

The fundamental problem with any redistribution of the wealth by our government is that it violates the property rights of the person who earned the money.  It is robbing Peter to pay (give to) Paul.  Whether welfare, entitlements, or subsidies, it is a violation of property rights.

“A man who does not own what he produces is a slave…”  And, “property rights are the only implementation of a man’s right to life.”  (Ayn Rand)  Without the right to property, a man cannot live an independent life.  Such a man does NOT have a right to his own life.

Either you are an advocate of rights, or you are not.  There is no compromise, no half measure, on this issue of principle.  The United States was founded on the principle of individual rights.  That distinction made her the only moral nation in history.  Individual rights are the basis of a free society–which we obviously are not today.

If robbing Peter is immoral, we should stop there.  We would never get to the question of whether or not we have a moral obligation to give the stolen funds, yes they are stolen, to Paul–to the needy.  The issue of whether or not we have a moral obligation to sacrifice our lives to the needy is the issue of whether or not Altruism is valid.  (In Objectivist writings you will find detailed explanations why Altruism is an evil and impractical ethics.)  Objectivism says that you get moral credit for creating wealth, not for giving it away.

Redistribution of the wealth is a violation of property rights.  That is more than sufficient reason for it to stop.  Our government was created to protect our rights, not to be its greatest violator.

“… We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.–That to secure these rights, Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed, –That whenever any Form of Government becomes destructive of these ends, it is the Right of the People to alter or to abolish it, and to institute new Government, …”  (Declaration of Independence)

A nation’s prosperity is proportional to its freedom.  If you look at the world you will see that all dictatorships are poor.  The wealthiest nations are semi-free (there are no free nations).  As an example, Mexico has abundant natural resources yet it is poor.  What it lacks is freedom.

America is well down the road to a Socialist dictatorship.  That is the reason why we will never recover from our current recession, and why we will eventually become a poor nation.  Unless we can reverse our present course and put our nation on the road to more freedom rather than less, our fate is unavoidable.  It really is up to “We the People”.  Our complacency will result in tyranny.

Note that our progressive income tax is a form of redistribution.  The simplest form of a truly fair system might be a consumption tax (as contrasted with an income tax) where everyone pays the same rate.

Regarding welfare itself, a rule that it cannot exceed the equivalent of 75% of minimum wage would be a good start.  Anyone receiving welfare needs an incentive to get a job and work for a living.  There is certainly no incentive when welfare pays more than the low job skill recipient can earn at minimum wage.

Regarding the minimum wage it was never intended to be a “living wage”.  It is an entry level position for an individual with minimal job skills.  Once employed he can learn marketable skills and move up the ladder.  When the government designates a minimum wage, anyone whose skills are not worth that amount of money becomes unemployable.  Minimum wage laws increase unemployment and prevent low skilled individuals from entering the work force.  There would be no “minimum wage” in a truly free and prosperous society.  Anyone could get a job, gain skills, move up in pay scale, and pursue his happiness.
