Anders Ingemarson does a good job of explaining the causes that killed Detroit.  As he says in this article, all previous articles on the subject only describe the symptoms, not the causes.  If we wish to prevent the United States from suffering the same fate as Detroit, we need to understand the causes, and then do something fundamental about it.
