Individualism versus Collectivism

The battle between freedom and tyranny in the United States is a battle between Individualism and Collectivism.  The choice between the Right or the Left is a false alternative because they are both Collectivists in Washington DC.  The concept of individual rights logically leads to a politics of Individualism.  The ideologically opposite politics is Collectivism, its three variations being Socialism, Fascism, and Communism.  Collectivism logically follows from the concept of the moral duty to serve your collective, whether that group is your village, community, nation, race, religion, sexual preference, or whatever.

The easiest way to understand Collectivism is to look a honey bee hive.  Everyone except the ruling elites are worker bees.  They have no individual rights.  Instead, they have a moral duty to sacrifice their lives for the “common good” of their hive.  The personal happiness of an individual bee is irrelevant; his life is expendable.  All that matters is that he contributes 100% to his hive.  The hive is the basic unit in this system, and its survival is all that matters.  The function of a worker bee is to serve his hive completely.

Collectivism is an appropriate social organization for insects but not for human beings.  Humans possess a conceptual consciousness.  They are defined as the rational animal.  It is their capacity for rational thought that makes their individual lives important–though few individuals ever fully exercise their potential.

The individual human being is the basic unit in Individualism.  Each individual has rights, among them being the rights to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.  The United States of America is the first nation in history to fully recognize the rights of its citizens.  All previous nations were founded on a Collectivist premise.  The moral duty of those citizens was to serve King and country.

The Individualist politics of the United States is the source of its individual freedom, and its freedom is the source of its exceptionalism.  A nation’s prosperity is proportional to its freedom.  That is the reason why the US became the wealthiest and most powerful nation on earth.  The Democrats (Leftists, Liberals, Progressives, Statists) have been moving the US toward Collectivism for well over a century.  The Republicans do not understand the danger and do not know how to fight against it–especially on principle.  Still, it has taken many decades to diminish the shining city on a hill, but the inevitable consequence is our current economic stagnation and reduced military power.

Collectivism robs Peter to pay Paul (welfare, entitlements, subsidies).  Robbing Peter is immoral because it is a violation of Peter’s right to his property.  Peter must therefore be convinced that it is his moral duty to help the needy, to help Paul.  When Peter gives up or otherwise stops producing, there will be no more money to give to Paul, to the looters and moochers.  Margaret Thatcher said that the trouble with Socialism is that you eventually run out of other people’s money.

When the US becomes fully Collectivist it will become poor.  All dictatorships are poor.  The wealthiest nations are semi-free.  There are no free nations.  America was the most free for well over a century, and that was the source of her wealth and power.  A free country necessarily has a small and delimited government.  As a government grows in size and power, the freedom of its citizens must necessarily diminish.  Only a few of these citizens will notice the gradual loss of their freedoms.  Like crabs in a pot of water being brought to a slow boil, it will be too late when they finally become aware.  They, like us, will inescapably be cooked.
